Miniature circular blackened bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the full-length figure of Columbia, representative of America, a sword in her raised right hand, a shield in her left, standing on the branch of an oak tree with four leaves for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, circumscribed above ‘AMERICAN DEFENSE’; the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / SERVICE / DURING THE / LIMITED EMERGENCY / PROCLAIMED BY / THE PRESIDENT / ON 8 SEPTEMBER 1939 / OR DURING THE / UNLIMITED EMERGENCY / PROCLAIMED BY / THE PRESIDENT / ON 27 MAY 1941’, a sprig of laurel at the base; diameter 16.1mm (0.63 inch); on replaced correct ribbon. The Medal was instituted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 28 June 1941 to be awarded for 12 months’ service in the Army or any length of service in the Navy or Marine Corps between 8 September 1939, and 7 December 1941.
