Miniature octagonal bronze medal with laterally-pierced lug for ribbon suspension; the face with the central part of the Department of the Army Seal; the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / MILITARY / ACHIEVEMENT’ with engraved attribution to ‘D.G. Ritzema’ above sprays of laurel; diameter 18.93mm (0.74 inch); on original ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear with maker’s mark ‘LI GI’ for Lordship Industries of Hauppauge, New York. The Medal was instituted Secretary of the Army John O. Marsh, Jr. on 2 March 1981 to be awarded ‘to members of the Armed Forces below the rank of colonel who, while serving in any capacity with the Army in a non-combat area, distinguish themselves by outstanding achievement or meritorious service, but not of a nature that would warrant the award of an Army Commendation Medal’.
