Circular silvered bronze medal with lateral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a crowned griffin rampant, a sword in its right hand, a shield bearing the arms of Baden in its left, above a cannon and cannon balls on a plinth, inscribed above ‘FÜR BADENS EHRE’ (For Baden’s Honour); the reverse inscribed ‘DEM / TAPFERN’ (the brave) with space below for attribution, all within a circular laurel wreath; diameter 30.24mm (1.19 inches), weight (including suspension ring) 12.79 grams (0.45 oz); on original ribbon. The Military Karl-Friedrich Order of Merit was instituted on 5 October 1805 by Karl Friedrich, Elector (later Grand Duke) of Baden to be awarded to officers for outstanding military merit. On 4 April 1807, gold and silver medals for non-commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers were instituted and were Baden’s highest awards for bravery for these ranks. There were eight versions of the medal in all, the eighth and last being introduced in 1915 and awarded until 1918. There were 154 awards of the Medal in 1915, 90 in 1916, 449 in 1917 and 589 in 1918, making a total of 1,282 awards. These recipients had the right to commission a reduced version of 30mm diameter, as in this example, (the original version being of 40.3mm diameter) from a Mint (Prägeanstalten) or jeweller for private wear. A similar example is in the collection of the Australian War Memorial (Ref. RELAWM01330). The Medal is very rare.
