Blackened bronze cross pattée alisée with wreath suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the Peruvian national arms of a shield bearing a vicuna, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia spilling coins, all framed by a wreath of laurel and palm circumscribed ‘SOC. FUNDADORES DE LA INDEPENDENCIA’ (Society of the Founders of Independence); the reverse inscribed ‘VENCEDORES EL 2 DE MAYO DE 1866 Y DEFENSORES CALIFICADOS DE LA PATRIA’ (Victors of the 2nd May 1866 and qualified defenders of the homeland); on original ribbon mounted with pin for wear. Spain made various attempts through the 19th Century to regain her former South American colonies. In one such, a Spanish fleet under Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez attacked an alliance of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador. The Spanish bombarded the Peruvian port of El Callao on 2 May 1866 but were eventually forced to withdraw. Peru’s independence was recognized by Spain in 1879; to this day 2 May is a national holiday in Peru.
