Decagonal gilt red bronze (tombak) medal on maple leaf and scroll ribbon bar; the face with the young head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA • CANADA’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen • Canada); the reverse stippled, with three maple leaves centrally, a naval crown above, fleur de lys to either side, an eagle, wings outstretched, below, a ribbon inscribed ‘SERVICE’ at the base, signed ‘BR’; on original ribbon. The medal was instituted on 15 December 1949 to replace various British awards used previously and recognises 12 years’ exemplary service in the Canadian Armed Forces. It is awarded to both officers and other ranks. The ten sides of the medal represent the provinces of Canada. The medal is not often found.
