Miniature faceted hexagonal bronze medal with laterally-pierced lug for ribbon suspension; the face with the United States Coast Guard seal centrally; the reverse inscribed ‘AWARDED / TO / FOR / OUTSTANDING SERVICE’, stylised laurel leaves to either side; diameter 16.31mm (0.64 inch); on original ribbon. The establishment of the award by the Commandant of the Coast Guard was announced on 15 August 1947, initially as the Coast Guard Commendation Ribbon. It was amended on 5 July 1951 and restyled the Coast Guard Commendation Medal in its current form on 2 October 1959. It is awarded ‘to members of the Armed Forces serving in any capacity with the Coast Guard for meritorious service resulting in unusual and outstanding achievement rendered while the Coast Guard is serving under Department of Homeland Security jurisdiction. Specifically, it may be awarded to persons who, while serving in any capacity with the Coast Guard (including foreign military personnel) distinguish themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement or service. To merit this award, the acts or services must be accomplished or performed in a manner above that normally expected and must be sufficient to distinguish the individual above others of comparable grade or rating who perform similar services’.
