Small circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a half-length standing male figure, a standard in his right hand, a flaming torch in his left; the reverse with a square plaque on a bed of oak and laurel leaves, inscribed ‘12. NOVEMBER 10 JAHRE REPUBLIK 1918-1928’; diameter 24.6mm (0.97 inch); on Austrian Imperial wartime ribbon. It is not known if this is an official or unofficial medal; our inclination is the latter, probably from a left-wing, anti-monarchist organisation. The Republic of Austria was declared amidst chaos and ruin at the end of World War I from the debris of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, essentially composed of its predominantly German-speaking areas. The Republic had a turbulent history, descending into civil strife and autocratic rule in the 1930s before being absorbed by Nazi Germany on 12 March 1938.
