Circular aluminium medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a view of the Shipka Monastery and Church circumscribed ‘ШИПЧ РУСКИ МОНАСТИРЪ ПАМЕТНИКЪ ВЪ СПОМЕНЪ НА ОСВЕТЯВАНИЕТО МУ 15 IX 1902’ (Consecration of the Russian Monastery 15 September 1902); the reverse with a head and shoulders portrait of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in uniform circumscribed ‘Н.И.В. ЦАРЬ АЛЕКСАНДРЪ II ОСВОБООИТЕЕЛЬ 1877-78 ГОД’ (H.I.H. Tsar Alexander II Liberator Years 1877-78 ), a spay of laurel at the base; surface wear and pitting (aluminium being a very soft metal); without ribbon. The Shipka Pass is a crucial route through the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina in Bulgarian) on the route to Turkey and was the scene of fierce fighting during the Russo-Ottoman War of 1878 that resulted in Bulgarian liberation from 500 years of Turkish rule. More than 5,500 Russian soldiers lost their lives in these battles and are commemorated in the Shipka Church and Monastery, built in 17th Century style from 1896 to 1902. A rare and historic medal.
