Circular silver medal with top projection with an opening for ribbon link ring; the face with a portrait in relief of Prince Danilo and Princess Militza, his wife, circumscribed ‘МИЛИЦА МЕКЛЕМБУРГ СТРЕЛИЦ – ДАНИЛ ПЕТРОВИЋ ЊЕГОШ’ (Militza Mecklenburg-Strelitz – Danilo Petrovich-Njegoš); the reverse inscribed ‘ВЈЕНУЛЊЕ ЊЕГОШ-СТРЕЛИЦ ЦЕТИЊЕ 1899’ (Marriage Njegoš -Strelitz Cetinje 1899), with the coats of arms of the two families encircled by a laurel wreath; age staining and rubbing; on replaced but correct ribbon. The medal was instituted by Prince Nicholas I in 1899 to commemorate the wedding on 27 July 1899 in Cetinje, the Montenegrin capital, of his eldest son and heir, Prince Danilo, with Jutta, daughter of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Prince Danilo was born in Cetinje on 29 June 1871 and died in Vienna on 24 September 1939. He became King of Montenegro in 1921 on the death of his father but abdicated that same year, Montenegro having been absorbed into the new creation of Yugoslavia (then called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes). Jutta, Herzogin von Mecklenburg-Strelitz was born on 24 January 1880, the daughter of Adolf Friedrich V Grossherzog (Grand Duke) von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Elisabeth Marie Frederica Amelia Agnes Prinzessin von Anhalt-Dessau. The Princess changed her name to Militza on marriage. She died in Rome on 17 February 1946. There were no children of the marriage. Rare medal.
