Circular blackened iron medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders of a soldier in hooded winter uniform sighting a rifle within a circle bearing the arms of the provinces of Finland, Karelia (Karjala) at the top and then clockwise Nylandia (Uusimaa), Laponia (Lappi), Tavastia (Häme), Alandia (Ahvenanmaa), Ostrobothnia (Pohjanmaa), Finland Proper (Varsinais-Suomi), Satakunda (Satakunta) and Savonia (Savo) and dated ‘1939-1940’; the reverse inscribed ‘KUNNIA ISÄNMAA’ (Honour, Fatherland) below a Greek cross and within a border of stylised spruce; on replaced correct ribbon.

The Medal was instituted on 2 August 1940 and awarded to participants in the Winter War of November 1939 to March 1940 against invading Soviet forces.
