Gilt bronze-edged red enamel Greek (Geneva) cross on integral crown suspension; the face with a centrally imposed decussate square gilt bronze plaque with the head of Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg facing left, circumscribed ‘S.A.R. / JOSEPHINE CHARLOTTE / GRANDE-DUCHESSE / DE LUXEMBOURG’ and signed ‘J.N.L.’; the reverse with a similar plaque bearing the arms of Grand Duchess; slight surface wear; on original ribbon. The Luxembourg Red Cross was founded on the initiative of Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde and the instigation of Emile and Aline Mayrisch in August 1914 on the eve of World War I. The involvement of successive Grand Duchesses continued when Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte served as President of the Youth Red Cross from 1959 to 1970 and as President of the Red Cross of Luxembourg from 1964 until her death in 2005. The Medal is scarce.
