Circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the insignia of the Cross of Recognition of a Maltese Cross with ball-tipped finials, the arms joined by pairs of linked rings, and a circular central medallion bearing the arms of the Latvian Republic; the reverse with a hawk, a ring in its talons, circumscribed ‘DOMAS UN DARBUS LATVIJAI’ (Thoughts and Deeds for Latvia) encircled by a wreath of corn stalks; the medal has been pinched with a sharp edged tool bottom left, leaving an indentation – possibly to denote that the Cross had been suppressed; on replaced correct ribbon. The order was founded in Liepāja in 1710 and reinstated in 1938 to be awarded for outstanding patriotism and acts benefiting the nation. The Cross was suppressed after the Soviet invasion of 1940 and was thus awarded for just two years, from 1938 to 1940.
