Silver cross pattée with striated edges to the arms with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion depicting St George slaying the dragon within a stylised laurel border; the reverse with a circular central medallion inscribed ‘ΑΞΙΑ’ (for Merit); surface scratches, especially to the lower arm of the reverse, probably from adjacent medals when worn; a short length of correct ribbon. The Cross was instituted on 13 May 1913 at the end of the First Balkan War and ranked as an Order, making it the highest war decoration. It is still the highest ranking Greek award for gallantry.
