Miniature gilt-edged white enamel cross pattée alisée with loop and gilt laurel-decorated ribbon bar; the face with a circular central deep red enamel medallion bearing a gilt Tudor (Imperial) crown within a green enamel and gilt laurel wreath; the reverse with a circular central deep red enamel medallion bearing the crowned cipher of Queen Elizabeth II within a green enamel and gilt laurel wreath; diameter 20.2mm (0.79 inch); on original ribbon with gilt laurel-decorated top bar. The Decoration was instituted on 6 September 1886 to be awarded ‘for distinguished services during active operations against the enemy’. Typically, it is awarded to commissioned officers of the rank of Major and above but below field rank, though awards have been made to more junior offices for acts of outstanding bravery. Since 1993, it has been awarded only for leadership and command, the newly-created Conspicuous Gallantry Cross being awarded in its place for gallantry in combat. An outstanding miniature.
