Miniature circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a view from the sea of the Fortaleza Ozama (Fort Ozama) at the entrance of Santo Domingo Harbour overlooking the Ozama River, circumscribed above ‘DOMINICAN CAMPAIGN’, dated ‘1916’ at the base; the reverse with an American eagle perched on an anchor, flukes to the right, laurel leaves beyond, inscribed ‘FOR’ ‘SERVICE’ to left and right respectively, circumscribed above ‘UNITED STATES NAVY’; diameter 15.96mm (0.63 inch); on possibly original ribbon. The Medal was instituted by Navy Department General Orders Number 76 on 29 December 1921 to be awarded to Navy personnel who served ashore in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) or aboard specified ships in their support between 5 May and 4 December 1916 to restore order following an attempted coup by General Desiderio Arias against President Juan Isidro Jiménez. The latter refused to serve under American occupation and a military government under Rear Admiral Harry Shepard Knapp was imposed, lasting until July 1924.
