Miniature oval silvered metal medal with claw and ribbon bar in the form of an eagle with wings outstretched; the face with the uncrowned young head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, circumscribed ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID. DEF.’ (Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith); the reverse inscribed ‘AIR EFFICIENCY AWARD’; height overall 32mm (1.25 inches), width 17.48mm (0.69 inch); on possibly replaced correct ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1942 to be awarded for 10 years’ efficient service in the Auxiliary and Volunteer Air Forces. The medal was superseded in 2000 by the Volunteer Reserves Service Medal. This example dates from before that date but after the accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1953.
