Miniature circular silvered bronze medal with lateral loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a Geneva cross centrally within a circular double oak leaf wreath, circumscribed ‘INTER ARMA CARITAS’ ((Mercy between armies); the reverse inscribed ‘SUOMEN PUNAINEN RISTI’ and ‘FINLANDS RODA KORS’ (Finnish Red Cross in Finnish and Swedish languages); age-toned; diameter 16.55mm (0.65 inch); on distinctive original ribbon. The Finnish Red Cross was founded on 7 May 1877 to tend sick and wounded members of the Finnish Guard during Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Following Finland becoming independent after the end of World War I, the Finnish Red Cross was recognised by the I.C.R.C. in 1920 and the I.F.R.C. in 1921. The Red Cross decorations were instituted on 20 February 1931 for meritorious service. This version, with lateral suspension loop, dates from before the mid-1970s. The Medal is rare in miniature.
