Miniature circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a view of the north coast of Haiti with the Citadelle Laferrière (Citadelle Henry Christophe) to the upper right, a palm tree in the left foreground, circumscribed above ‘HAITIAN CAMPAIGN’, dated ‘1915’ at the base; the reverse with a bald American eagle, wings spread, perched on a naval anchor, flukes to the right, above the inscription ‘FOR SERVICE’, circumscribed above ‘UNITED STATES NAVY’, a wreath of oak and laurel below; age-toned; diameter 17.47mm (0.69 inch); on replaced correct ribbon mounted with pins for wear. The Medal was instituted by Navy Department General Orders Number 305 on 22 June 1917 to be awarded to Navy personnel who engaged in operations, either ashore in Haiti between 9 July and 6 December 1915 or at sea aboard fourteen specific ships between stated dates, to counter the threat to U.S. and other economic interests posed by continual violent political instability. A good period miniature.
