Circular bronze medal in the form of a scalloped circle with the points of the compass, an elongated triangle representing the form of a supersonic jet imposed, laterally pierced near the tip with ring for ribbon suspension, an equilateral triangle superimposed, point downwards; the reverse circumscribed ‘FOR COMBAT READINESS AIR FORCE’, maker’s market the base; on original ribbon, brooch-mounted for wear. The Medal was instituted on 9 March 1964 to be awarded for superior and meritorious duty to the United States Air Force. The award criteria for the Medal were amended in 1967 and the Medal became an award for achievement and service to be awarded to any member of U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard, or Air Force Reserve who has accomplished sustained individual combat mission readiness or undertaken the preparedness for direct weapon-system employment. A recipient must have completed twenty-four cumulative months of sustained duty performance to qualify for the Medal. Examples produced during the 1960s bear the maker’s mark on the reverse; after that date, the maker’s mark appears on the reverse of the brooch. A very good older example.
