Gilt and enamel medallion in the form of an ensign flying from a stay, mounted on a stickpin; the face with a red enamel Gothic cross on a white enamel ground within a black enamel border; the reverse plain; width of the ensign 18.76mm (0.74 inch), overall height 50.28mm (1.98 inches).

The DGzRS was founded at Kiel on 29 May 1865 and the ensign adopted on 24 May 1867.  It is active today with 180 full-time crew and 800 volunteers manning 20 cruisers and 40 lifeboats, all without any state financial support.
