Bronze badge of cherry blossom form, the petals enamelled brown for a first class award; the face with a fencing mask imposed centrally on crossed rifle with fixed bayonet and sword; the reverse with four kanji characters and the figure ‘1’, with hinged hasp for wear; a small scratch to the upper petal of the face, slight age oxidisation spots to the reverse; diameter 37.0mm (1.45 inches).

The badge was instituted in 1934 to be awarded to military who excelled in swordsmanship.  This is an early example since, as wartime shortages impinged, the badge was made in aluminium.

The badge is not often found.
