Miniature silver and enamel insignia in the form of the arms of the Société Nationale de Tir with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a crowned shield bearing a white enamel target imposed on crossed standards, a red enamel ribbon above inscribed ‘POUR LA PATRIE’ (for the homeland), crossed rifles and a laurel wreath below bearing a blue enamel ribbon inscribed ’SOCIETE NAT. DE TIR’; the reverse plain; height 19.31mm (0.76inch); some loss of enamel; on a short length of original ribbon in the French national colours. The Society was founded in 1860 with the motto ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum’ (if you wish for peace, prepare for war). This example probably dates from the late 19th Century.
