Circular gilt and polychrome enamel badge with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with a gilt rayed pauwlonia flower imposed centrally on a gilt-edged red enamel chrysanthemum surrounded by green pauwlonia leaves and white and gilt pauwlonia flowers; the reverse inscribed ‘The centennial anniversary / ceremony of Japanese volunteer / fire corps. / THE JAPAN VOLUNTEER/ FIREMEN ASSOCIATION’, dated ‘1980.11.27’, Japanese characters below meaning ‘grand assembly in commemoration of one hundred years of fire fighting’; diameter 45.68mm (1.8 inches); on probably original ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear. The first Japanese fire service was established as long ago as the early 17th Century but it was during the Meiji period in the late 19th Century, as Japan opened to the West, that the service became widespread. During the first half of the 20th Century it was militarised but following defeat in World War II it has become locally-organised and civilian with more than three thousand five hundred corps and more than nine hundred thousand volunteers.
