Miniature gilt-edged green enamel medal in the form of two vertical and two horizontal hexagons conjoined within a gilt laurel wreath, with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a gilt American eagle from the Seal of the Department of Defense imposed, the upper hexagon with thirteen gilt five-pointed stars; the reverse with a central rectangular plaque, inscribed ‘FOR / MILITARY’ above and ‘MERIT’ below, a laurel spray at the base; diameter 20.63mm (0.81 inch); on original ribbon with pins for wear. The Medal was established by Secretary of Defense Robert E. McNamara on 25 June 1963 to be awarded ‘to members of the Armed Forces who, while assigned to a joint activity, distinguish themselves by outstanding achievement or meritorious service, but not to an extent that would justify award of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal’.
