Circular dark bronze medal with claw and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a lifesaving scene off a coast, signed ‘VAUGHTON’ and ‘BIRM’ below (for Vaughton of Birmingham), all within a ring inscribed ‘THE LIFE SAVING SOCIETY * ESTABLISHED 1891’; the reverse inscribed ‘AWARDED TO’ and engraved with the attribution ‘H. E. KNIGHT’, all within a ring inscribed ‘QUEMCUNQUE MISEUM VIDERIS HOMINEM SCIAS’ (Latin = whosoever you see in distress, recognise him as a fellow man). The medallion is awarded for knowledge, skill and judgement in lifesaving. The Life Saving Society was founded in 1891 with the purpose of safeguarding lives in, on and near water. The Society has had Royal Patronage since 1904 and this medal is from the period before that date. A rare early example.
