Circular black-lacquered bronze medal with laterally pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face inscribed in silvered characters ‘chien-kuo’ (National Foundation) within a wreath of sorghum stalks with silvered heads; the reverse inscribed in characters ‘Great Manchukuo National Foundation Merit Medal, Ta Tung 1st Year’; on original ribbon complete with hook and eye fittings; in original fitted embossed black lacquer case of issue with slight wear to the second and third characters on the lid. The medal was instituted on 1 March 1933 to acknowledge those who had been instrumental in establishing the new ‘independent’ Great Manchu State. In 1934 it became the ‘Great Manchu Empire’ and this medal was thus the first and last decoration of the Japanese puppet Independent State of Manchukuo. The medal is rare, especially in its case of issue.
