Circular black-lacquered bronze medal with laterally pierced spherical ring suspension; the face inscribed in silvered characters ‘chien-kuo’ (National Foundation) within a wreath of sorghum stalks with silvered heads; the reverse inscribed in characters ‘Great Manchukuo National Foundation Merit Medal, Ta Tung 1st Year’; on original ribbon complete with hook and eye fittings. The medal was instituted on 1 March 1933 to acknowledge those who had been instrumental in establishing the new ‘independent’ Great Manchu State. In 1934 it became the ‘Great Manchu Empire’ and this medal was thus the first and last decoration of the Japanese puppet Independent State of Manchukuo. The medal is now quite rare.
