Circular silvered bronze medal with laterally pierced ball suspension; the face with a shrine in classical style; the reverse inscribed in characters ‘Kang Teh 7th year / National Foundation Sacred Shrine Foundation Commemorative Medal / 7th Month 15th Day’; on original ribbon with original eye but now lacking hook.

Having invaded Manchuria in 1931 and established a puppet regime, the occupying Japanese Imperial Kwantung (or Guandong) Army built a shrine known as the National Foundation Sacred Shrine in the national palace in Hsinking to symbolise Japanese imperial power and ‘Japanese-Manchurian friendship’ (!)

The shrine was opened on 15 July 1940 and this rare medal was struck to commemorate the event.
