Silver medal on swivel suspension elaborately decorated with stalks of sorghum; the face in the stylised form of four pillars in a cross around the base of an octagonal pillar with a central octagonal yellow enamel medallion encircled by concentric enamel rings in the national colours of black, white, blue and red within a border of white enamel with gilt dots, four gilt diagonal lines each ending in a white enamel circle, each line flanked by two further white enamel circles; the reverse with four characters meaning ‘Order of Merit Decoration’; on replaced almost correct ribbon. The Order was created on 14 September 1936 in eight classes and corresponds to the Japanese Imperial Order of the Sacred Treasure. It was suppressed in 1945. The award is unique in that the classes are indicated by the bar or bars on the ribbon, absent on this example. A rare order.
