Tear-shaped bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a radiant rising sun above a laurel wreath, the Roman numerals ‘XX’ (20) imposed centrally, a ribbon below dated ’23 August’; the reverse of similar design, a plaque below inscribed ‘A XX-A ANIVERSARE A ELIBERARII PATRIEI 1944-1964’; on replaced correct ribbon and original pentagonal hanger. The medal was instituted by Decree 504 on 11 August 1964 to mark the 20th anniversary of the coup led by King Michael with the support of the army and opposition parties that overthrew the Antonescu regime and led to the Romanian army (which had been fighting alongside German forces in Russia since June 1941) joining the Red Army in driving German forces out of Romania and back across Hungary, Austria and Czechoslovakia. A good example.
