Miniature circular gilt metal medal with laterally pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with Pegasus, a winged horse, above clouds and a globe (after the sculpture by Publio Morbiducci), circumscribed below ‘AL VALORE AERONAUTICO’; the reverse inscribed ‘REPUBBLICA ITALIANA’, the arms of the Italian Republic, being a five-pointed star imposed on a cogwheel within an olive and oak wreath, above, a fist holding lightning bolts below; diameter 15.8mm (0.62 inch); on replaced ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1953 to replace the award created in 1927 that bore the royal arms and is awarded for acts of bravery in the air.
