Miniature circular stamped light alloy medal with eyelet for suspension; the face with a Blériot XI aircraft soaring above a hilly landscape within a wreath of laurel and palm, a ribbon at the base dated ‘1914-15’; the reverse plain; diameter 20.33mm (0.8 inch). The Blériot XI came to fame when used by Louis Blériot on the first successful flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine on 25 July 1909. It entered military service with the French and Italian Air Forces in 1910 and with the British Royal Flying Corps in 1912. In 1914-15, the aircraft was in service with eight French, six Italian and six British squadrons. This Medal may well have been produced and sold for charitable purposes in 1915.
