Circular silvered bronze medal with lion head suspension; the face with a female head in Phrygian bonnet of Art Deco design, representative of the French Republic and circumscribed ‘EDUCATION PHYSIQUE’; the reverse with a rayed rising sun inscribed ‘PAX ET LABOR’ (Latin = Peace and Labour) above a plaque inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’; with Paris Mint cornucopia bronze assay marks on the edge; deeply age-toned; on original deeply age-faded ribbon mounted for wear in the French style. The medal was instituted in 1927 to reward those involved in physical education and was awarded for long service or for signal achievement, for instance in Olympic Games, national and international championships and the like. The medal was not attributed in the period 1939 to 1945 and was replaced in 1946. It thus had an effective life of just 12 years from 1927 to 1939.
