Circular gilt bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a radiant five-pointed star at the base, circumscribed above ‘ЗА ОСВОБОЖДЕНИЕ’ (for the Liberation), a banner centrally inscribed ‘ВАРШАВЬІ’ (Warsaw); the reverse dated ‘17 ЯНВАРЯ 1945’ (17 January 1945), a five-pointed star above; some age discoloration to the gilding; on replaced correct pentagonal hanger and ribbon. The medal was instituted on 9 June 1945 to be awarded to Soviet military who participated in the liberation of Warsaw between 14 and 17 January 1945. The Soviet liberation of Warsaw is notorious for the Red Army being halted for political reasons on the outskirts of the city and leaving the heroic but ill-equipped Polish Home Army to fight against the might of the German forces for sixty-six days before advancing in January 1945.
