Circular gilt medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with head and shoulders portraits of a soldier, airman and sailor facing left above the letters ‘DDR’ (for Deutsche Demokratische Republik = German Democratic Republic), oak leaves to either side, circumscribed ‘FÜR HERVORRAGENDE VERDIENSTE’ (for Outstanding Merit) above and ‘NATIONALE VOLKSARMEE’ (National People’s Army) below; the reverse with the state coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic circumscribed ‘FÜR DEN SCHUTZ DER ARBEITER- UND-BAUERN- MACHT’ (for the Defence of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Power), all within a wreath of laurel; on original ribbon and pentagonal hanger mounted for wear; with original ribbon bar mounted for wear. The Medal was instituted on 1 June 1956 in three classes to be awarded ‘für hervorragende Verdienste und Einsatzbereitschaft beim Aufbau und bei der Festigung der Nationalen Volksarmee. Further, for excellence in military leadership and the political and military training as well as the education of military personnel. Not least for excellence in the care and maintenance as repair of technical equipment). It was awarded in the name of the Minister for National Defence and was presented usually on National People’s Army Day, 1 March and on the Day of the Republic, 7 October. The Medal was cancelled following German reunification in 1990. An excellent example.
