Bronze pentagonal medal with integral bar for ribbon suspension; the face with the images in relief of the current and the early 19th-Century frigate Niterói within a rope border, an elaborate crown above composed of the sterns and sails of sailing ships; the reverse inscribed ‘A MARINHA DO BRASIL A UM MARINHEIRO’ (The Brazilian Navy to a Sailor) within a stylised palm wreath; on original ribbon. The medal was instituted by Decree 83.805 on 1 August 1979 to reward those who demonstrate exemplary devotion to duty and exceptional professional skill during operations at sea. The original Niterói was a 36-gun frigate active during the war against Argentina of 1825-1828. The current Niterói class of frigates, including the Niterói herself, dates from the 1970s and has been modernised in recent years. A total of six are in service with the Brazilian Navy. The medal is rarely found.
