Circular silvered medal on double kukri ribbon suspension bar; the face with the crowned royal arms centrally within a ring inscribed in Nepali characters, dated 2028-2053 (AD 1972-1997) in Nepali numerals at the base, the reverse with crossed kukris centrally, circumscribed in Nepali characters and dated ‘2053’ (AD 1997) in Nepali numerals at the base; on original ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1997 to mark the silver jubilee of the accession to the throne of King Bīrendra Bīr Bikram Śāh (1945-2001). King Bīrendra succeeded to the throne on the death of his father on 31 January 1972 but was not crowned until 1975. He was assassinated on 1 June 2001 together with Queen Aishwarya and nine other members of the royal family, allegedly by Crown Prince Dipendra who died a few days later from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The Nepalese monarchy was abolished in June 2008. The medal is not often found.
