Small miniature circular bronze medal with eyelet and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head of Emperor Napoleon III facing right, circumscribed ‘NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR, signed with monogram ‘TC’ (or ‘CT’); the reverse inscribed ‘VICTOIRE / DE SOLFERINO / GAGNÉE / LE 24 JUIN / 1859’ (Victory of Solferino won 24 June 1859) within a laurel wreath; diameter 13.01mm (0.51 inch). The medal was produced in Paris following the victory of the French Imperial and Piedmontese armies over those of the Austrian Empire at Solferino, last of a series of battles that led to the secession of Lombardy to Sardinia and the formation of the Kingdom of Italy. A version of the medal was also produced bearing the head of King Vittorio Emanuele II.
