Miniature circular bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a sheathed Roman sword hanging on a tablet resembling the discharge certificate of a Roman Legionary inscribed ‘FOR SERVICE ON THE MEXICAN BORDER’ within a laurel wreath; the reverse with the arms of the United States of America above a scroll, crossed rifles to the left, crossed sabres to the right and crossed cannon below representing the infantry, cavalry and artillery respectively, all within a laurel wreath; diameter 17.85mm (0.7 inch); on original slightly tired ribbon with brooch bar mounted for wear. The Medal was instituted by Act of Congress on 9 July 1918 to be awarded primarily to members of the National Guard for military service on the Mexican border between 9 May 1916 and 24 March 1917 or with the Mexican Border Patrol between 1 January 1916, and 6 April 1917. Those who were eligible for the Mexican Service Medal could not be awarded the Mexican Border Service Medal. A good period miniature.
