Miniature gilt bronze cross pattée with rays between the arms, on integral crown suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the lion rampant of Belgium within a ring inscribed with the national motto ‘L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE’ (Strength through Unity); the reverse with a circular central medallion bearing the double ‘A’ cipher of King Albert I within a ring inscribed ‘MERITE ANCIENNETE ARMEE’ (Military Merit for Long Service); diameter 13.14mm (0.52 inch); on replaced correct ribbon. The decoration was instituted on 22 December 1873 and is awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for ten years’ service. This example is from the reign of King Albert I, 1909 to 1934.
