Circular white metal badge; the face with a circular central medallion hatched for the heraldic colour sable (black) with a Maltese cross, plain for the heraldic colour argent (white) with a lion between the arms upper left and lower right and a unicorn between the arms lower left and upper right, all within a ring inscribed ‘THE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION’ with the patent mark ‘Rg. 111901’ at the base; the reverse plain with loops and split pin for wear; diameter 32.59mm (1.28 inches). St. John Ambulance was founded in 1877 as a subsidiary charity of the Venerable Order of St. John to train ordinary members of the public in first aid to treat the victims of the then frequent accidents in the workplace and also to provide first aid assistance at events. Today the Association is the leading British charity providing first aid training and assistance. This example is from the first half of the twentieth century.
