Circular white metal badge with ribbon below; the face with a circular central black medallion with a silvered Maltese cross centrally with a lion between the arms upper right and lower left and a unicorn between the arms lower right and upper left, all within a stippled ring inscribed ‘THE ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION’, a ribbon below inscribed ‘ST JOHN / AMBULANCE / BRIGADE’; the reverse inscribed ‘REGISTERED AT / ST. JOHNS GATE / LONDON’, the pin for wear now absent; width 25.45mm (1.00 inch); some surface wear. St. John Ambulance was founded in 1877 as a subsidiary charity of the Venerable Order of St. John to train ordinary members of the public in first aid to treat the victims of the then frequent accidents in the workplace and also to provide first aid assistance at events. Today the Association is the leading British charity providing first aid training and assistance. This example is from the World War II era.
