Circular cupro-nickel medal on claw and foliate scroll suspension; the face with the seated figure of Britannia, an upright trident in her right hand, a lion sejant to the left, its forepaw resting on a Tudor crown, circumscribed above ‘NATIONAL SERVICE’ and dated ‘1939-1960’ at the base, signed with monogram ‘JHS’; the reverse inscribed ‘FOR / CROWN / AND / COUNTRY’ within a laurel wreath; age-toned, a couple of slight surface scratches; on original ribbon.
The medal is unofficial, available to those who performed National Service, both military and civilian, between January 1939 and December 1960, or their next of kin, and was originally sponsored by the Royal British Legion.
