Miniature octagonal bronze medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with an American eagle, its head facing right, wings outstretched, perched on a fouled naval anchor, flukes to the left, a terrestrial globe below, the word ‘HEROSIM’ at the base; the reverse plain; diameter 16.16mm (0.63 inch); on original ribbon with pins for wear. The medal was instituted by Act of Congress on 7 August 1942 (effective since 6 December 1941, the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor) to be awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps for acts of heroism other than in the face of the enemy. It is often awarded for life-saving and usually requires an act that risks the life of the recipient.
