Gilt-edged red enamel cross pattée with oak leaf and acorn suspension; the face plain; the reverse unenamelled; height 43.4mm (1.7 inches); on original ribbon. The Order was instituted in 1960 on the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator and reformed in 1962 and 1986. The Order is awarded for outstanding service and achievement in the field of maritime history and in research and disseminating knowledge of Portuguese expansion in the world. It is named for the Infante Henrique (Prince Henry), 1394-1460, a younger son of King João of Portugal, who organised and financed unprecedented expeditions and trading with the western coast of Africa. A high-quality example.
