Circular gilt metal medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a full-length female figure in traditional Philippine dress holding the Philippine flag, a row of flags on poles to either side, all within a hatched ring inscribed ‘PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE * JULY 4 1946’; the reverse inscribed ‘GRANTED / PHILIPPINE / INDEPENDENCE / BY THE UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA’; on original ribbon mounted for wear, the brooch bar with maker’s mark ‘GRACO GI’. The award was originally the Philippine Independence Ribbon, instituted on 3 July 1946 by order of the Philippine Army Headquarters to be awarded to those serving on the Philippine Islands or in its territorial waters on that day. The criteria were amended in 1954 to those who had previously received both the Philippine Defense Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. It was not until 1968 that President Ferdinand Marcos authorised the creation and production of a medal. A good example.
