Circular roughly cast circular silvered metal medal ; the face inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1848’ ; the reverse inscribed ‘L ????T. 1848 LA GARDE NATIONAL DE PARIS APPORTE LES DRAPEAUX A CELLE DE LILLE. R.F.’ ( ?? 1848 the National Guard of Paris brings the standards to those of Lille. French Republic). The medal is of crude manufacture and marks the arrival in Lille of the Parisian National Guard on 8 October 1848 to present new standards on which were emblazoned the symbols of democracy. Economic depression in 1846-1847 led to increasing unrest and fighting broke out in Paris on 23 February 1848, some of the army opening fire on demonstrators, others joining them. The important northern industrial city of Lille was also in ferment that night with some of the contents of the Prefecture burnt in the street. King Louis Philippe abdicated the following day. In due course Prince Louis Napoleon was elected President and later became Emperor Napoleon III. An interesting revolutionary medal.
