Miniature circular gilt medal on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of Nikolaas Rockox, circumscribed ‘NICOLAUS ROCKOX – 1560 1640’; the reverse with the Rockox arms with helm above, within a ring inscribed ‘ROCKOXHUIS ANTWERPEN’; diameter 14.96mm (0.59 inch); on original ribbon mounted for wear in the Belgian style. Nikolaas Rockox (1560-1640) was a successful Antwerp merchant, elected mayor of the city eight times, patron of Flemish artists such as Rubens and van Dyck and known for his enlightened policies. In 1603 he bought the house ‘Den Gulden Rinck’ (The Golden Ring) on Keizerstraat, Antwerp, together with the house next door. Today the house is a museum and is open to the public.
