Oval zinc alloy badge; the face with a wreath of oak and laurel encircling a hatched ground with residue of red paint, a pale blue painted cross pattée with scalloped ends to the arms bearing a gilt Bulgarian lion, a helmet in its right paw, an escutcheon bearing the figure ‘1’ in its left, the royal crown with flying pendelia (tassels) above, a scroll below inscribed ‘За БЪЛГАРНЯ’ (for Bulgaria); the reverse with pinback for wear, the post and plate possibly replaced. The relatively poor quality of this example compared with early examples, suggests that it is either from the late days of World War II or a later copy. The visible wear and age-toning suggests to us that it is the former.
