Miniature circular silver medal on claw and scroll suspension bar; the face with the head of King George VI facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIUS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP.’ (George VI by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India); the reverse with the crowned eagle, wings outstretched, of the Royal Air Force, circumscribed ‘FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT +’; diameter 18.14mm (0.71 inch); on original ribbon. The medal was instituted on 1 July 1919 to be awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for 18 years’ exemplary service. The first version bore the head of King George V and this was replaced by that of King George VI in 1937. In 1948, following the granting of independence to India, the circumscription on the face was changed and a second George VI type issued. A good example.
